The Central London County Court has approved a settlement for Mrs B, who suffers from
Alzheimer's and was involved in an accident while in the care of Camden NHS Trust.
Mrs B was admitted to St. Pancras hospital for observation. She was in a confused state. She was unsupervised and allowed out of her bed. She hurt herself when she fell over unguarded repair works that were being carried out on the floor of the ward on which she was staying. As a result, she
fractured her
hip. She now requires 24-hour physical nursing care, which can only be provided in a care home, 45 minutes away from the family home.
Due to her fractured hip, she is now in a care home, miles from her family
Her husband decided to consult the
personal injury department on recommendation from the family solicitor. After investigation and negotiation, Camden agreed to pay £40,000 and this settlement was approved by the court for investment for Mrs B.
"We decided to take action not so much for the money, which will never really compensate for the injury that was suffered, but more to make sure that the hospital appreciated the pain and suffering that was caused to my dear wife" said Mr B.
"
Alzheimer's is a terrible problem in any event both for the sufferer and the family, and to have it made worse by the carelessness of the hospital was dreadful. It means that I cannot get to see her as often as I would like, because of the length of travel. At least the settlement means that we can try and put this behind us and care for her as much as possible."
