Cherie Pridham , a professional
long distance stage racing cyclist, has been awarded compensation for her injuries from a hit and run accident.
Cherie is an established
professional cyclist. She has ridden for European teams, including the Swiss based Mazza Team and the Italian-based MAPEI team. She has also competed with distinction in seven Tour de France Féminen races (
Women's Tour de France). She finished the race all seven times and gained the 'Most Combative Rider' award on two occasions. In 2004 Cherie was invited to ride for a top French ladies team, ES Gervais Lilas based near Paris, and was placed 6th whilst competing with the team in the GP le Pré Saint Gervais race.
Hit and run driver caused the accident
Cherie and her training partner had been out on a training ride in her home town of Derby when a motorist drove alongside them. The nearside rear passenger leant out of the car window and swung a heavy carrier bag at Cherie's companion. The bag hit his head and caused him to swerve and hit the curb and Cherie. She was unable to avoid hitting the bag and was
thrown from her bicycle onto the pavement. As a result she injured her left wrist and her bike was also damaged.
Cherie went through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (
CICA) to claim compensation for her injuries. She was represented by
Anna Hart, a member of Leigh Day & Co.'s cycling and sports injury team, headed by partner
Sue Bence.
