6 July 2012
This year, Action Mesothelioma Day
will be held on Friday, 6 July 2012. Leigh Day & Co will be attending a commemorative event organised London Hazard Centre at Stratford Town Hall, Newham. Mesothelioma Action Day is commemorated around the country, with various events being held in a number of cities.
Various speakers will be attending the London Hazards Centre event, including Andy Slaughter MP (Shadow Justice Minister), Roisin Trehy (Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse, St Barts NHS Trust), and Eileen Beadle who runs the East London Mesothelioma Support Group (ELMS). Doves will be released during the event to remember all those who have died and suffering because of asbestos.
The Action Mesothelioma Campaign was started in 2006 by the British Lung Foundation, to raise awareness, support and remember those who have lived or have been affected by the devastating disease.
is an aggressive cancer of the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma) or the stomach (peritoneal mesothelioma), which can only be caused by asbestos exposure. Approximately 2,000 people in England and Wales die from the disease each year, and this is set to continue until the peak of mesothelioma deaths, which is expected around 2020..
There is no cure for mesothelioma, but there are various treatments and surgeries to address the symptoms and effects of the disease. Last week it was reported that the Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire has opened a Mesothelioma Cancer Research Centre, set up by the British Lung Foundation
and the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund
. The “Mesobank” will hold live tissue samples and anonymous clinical data which will hopefully greatly improve the research into the disease.
Leigh Day & Co has a dedicated asbestos
team specialising in claims for asbestos victims and their families, particularly mesothelioma sufferers. We have successfully recovered millions of pounds in compensation over the last 10 years for victims of the disease.
