Payout for client who suffered radiation overdose

18 October 2010

Suzanne White, a partner in leading clinical negligence firm Leigh Day & Co, has recently settled a claim on behalf of a client who suffered extreme radiation burns and a perforated bowel after receiving the wrong dose of radiation.

Suzanne’s client was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer, in November 2006 and in January 2007, after discussing various treatment options with her consultant, gave consent for treatment by radiotherapy.

Unfortunately, the calculation of the dose of radiation that was given to our client was incorrect and she was given a massive overdose of radiation. Our client was re-admitted to hospital, initially to intensive care.  The radiation overdose caused her extensive burning and a small bowel perforation.  She was gravely ill, suffered considerable debilitating pain, severe scarring and she now has to live with a permanent stoma due to the bowel perforation. She has been unable to return to work, go to the gym and her social life has been severely curtailed.

The Royal Surrey County Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has now paid significant compensation to our client.  Suzanne said:

My client put her trust in the doctors who were treating her cancer. To then be told that she had been given the wrong dose of radiation which caused such dreadful suffering in addition to her cancer, was extremely concerning. My client has bravely got on with her life despite her injuries; she was very lucky not to have died, this could have all been avoided if the correct dose of radiation had been given.
