A former UK resident, who emigrated to Australia in the 1970’s, has recovered nearly £200,000 in compensation from his former employers as a result of his diagnosis with mesothelioma, an asbestos related lung cancer.
Our client worked in the engine rooms and boiler rooms on ships in the Merchant Navy in the 1970’s. He was exposed extensively to asbestos from lagging used to insulate pipes and machinery and instructed Leigh Day & Co to sue his former employers, P&O, when he developed breathing problems in 2009. He was also exposed when working for the London Borough of Bromley who were joined as defendants to the claim.
Our client had originally contacted solicitors in Australia, Slater and Gordon, with whom Leigh Day & Co work frequently on cases for ex-pats living in Australia who develop asbestos diseases as a result of UK exposure. Leigh Day & Co and Slater and Gordon worked together to pursue the claim through the UK court system and were able to bring about an amicable settlement to the claim just before Christmas 2009.
As well as the illness stopping him from working, his wife had to give up her job as a nurse to care for him during his illness. Their combined loss of income arrived at the same time their financial needs increased due to the disability caused by his illness. The compensation claimed is crucial in cases such as this to help asbestos victims to simply deal with the demands of their illness, such as medical treatment and care requirements.
