On 28th June 2009, former Leigh Day & Co client, Max Burt began his epic cycle ride from Aberdeen to London in 22 days on a three wheeled reclining cycle.
The purpose of his journey is to change people’s perceptions about disability : to highlight both the diversity in disability, and the ability to overcome obstacles – ‘diversability’. A campaign that Leigh Day & Co were keen to support, so we provided Max with the initial development funding for him to set up the ‘
Everything is Possible in Life’ cycle project as part of his charity ‘Diversability’.
Max sustained massive head injuries after a freak collision with an out-of-control fire engine 10 years ago, he was left paralysed on his left side and a permanent wheelchair user. The head injury also left him deaf in one ear, with uncontrollable tremors, and severe sight and speech impairments.
Sally Moore, Partner at Leigh Day & Co who acted for Max in a legal claim following a road traffic accident in which Max sustained severe injuries said:
“Max is an inspirational person who has worked hard to overcome all the challenges he has faced since his accident. His courage and determination means I am confident he will successfully complete this cycle and continue to achieve his objective of changing people’s perceptions about disability”
Max will complete the final stage of his journey on Sunday 19th July into Central London. Many of his friends and supporters will be joining him including Sally Moore.
Since his accident, Max has become involved with many disability-related organisations. He has been part of the Government backed steering group ‘Images of Disability’. He is an Associate Member of both the Employers Forum on Disability (EFD) and the Broadcasting and Creative Industries Disability Network. Max was also chosen as a finalist for the Stelios Disabled Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2007.
