Time trial damages

A British Cycling member has received damages after being injured during a time trial

Paul Pickup

14 January 2009

British Cycling member Paul Pickup has recovered compensation following a road traffic collision in October 2007. Paul was injured when he was taking part in a time trial. He was passing a junction to his left hand side when a taxi travelling in the opposite direction to him turned right across his path into the side turning.

Paul could not avoid a collision and suffered injuries and damage to his bicycle and clothing. He needed some time off work but made a full recovery.

Paul received compensation for his injuries, pain and suffering, property damage and loss of earnings from the taxi driver’s insurers who tried to argue that Paul should share some responsibility for the collision because he was taking part in a race at the time. That argument was rejected and was eventually dropped.

Paul was represented by Penny Knight of Leigh Day & Co’s Cycling and Sports Injury team. His claim was supported and funded by British Cycling.
