Food factory fined over rotten smells

23 January 2009

The BBC has reported that a food factory, HL Foods Ltd plant now known as Premier Foods Ltd, in Long Sutton Lincoln has been fined £140,000 for not addressing a faulty effluent plant, which produced a smell like rotting cabbage, affecting the surrounding neighbourhood. The neighbours kept a diary of the nuisance and were embarrassed when friends visited because of the bad smell.

The Environmental Agency said that the problems in 2007 were not properly addressed. They were called back numerous times because of residents' complaints.

Premier Foods was ordered to pay a fine of £140,000 and £4,421 in costs. The Defendants said that the effluent plant was operated by Contractors but as a result of the problems it planned to take over the running of the plant.

Gene Matthews “It is not acceptable for a company to operate a way that prevents people from being able to enjoy their homes in the normal way that we would all expect. People must be allowed to live their lives without this type of interference. I am glad that the Environmental Agency (EA) have taken action and hope the EA is more proactive in bringing these cases to court.”
