British Cycling member, Ralph Cooper, has successfully settled his claim for compensation following a road traffic collision in April 2007.
Ralph, an outdoor activity trainer for a management consultancy company was injured when he was cycling home from work. The motorist, driving an HGV and trailer, attempted to overtake Ralph but had to veer suddenly back to the left to avoid an oncoming vehicle, knocking him off his bike with the trailer instead. The motorist was convicted of driving without due care and attention.
Ralph sustained a fractured right collarbone and a fractured left wrist as a result of the collision and had to have surgery to fix the shoulder in place. He also sprained his right ankle and tore his right Achilles tendon. He was off work for seven weeks and needed physiotherapy for 12 weeks.
Fortunately Ralph made a good recovery from his injuries, although he remains at risk of early onset arthritis. He recovered compensation for his injuries, pain and suffering, property damage and loss of earnings.
Ralph was represented by
Penny Knight of Leigh Day & Co’s Cycling and Sports Injuries Team. His claim was supported and funded by British Cycling.
