Yet another London cyclist has been killed by a lorry failing to notice a cyclist. Eilidh Cairns was cycling to her office in west London when a lorry driver failed to see her. She was then dragged under the heavy goods vehicle in the morning rush-hour in Notting Hill Gate and later died in the Royal London Hospital. The 53-year-old lorry driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
New regulations are due to come into force on 31 March 2009 that will require lorries over 3.5 tonnes registered from 2000 to have safety mirrors fitted. Whilst this move is welcomed by the cycle injury team at law firm Leigh Day & Co Penny Knight, head of the team, points out that this still leaves more than 100,000 pre 2000 lorries on the road who will not have to have safety mirrors fitted to help drivers spot cyclists, particularly those waiting to turn left alongside them.
The cycling and sports injuries team at Leigh Day & Co has represented many cyclists who have been injured in collisions. For more information please contact
