Australian recovers damages for asbestos exposure

18 April 2009

An Australian asbestos victim has recovered damages in excess of £100,000, less than three months since instructing Leigh Day & Co to pursue his claim against his former employers.

Our client worked in the shipping industry in the 1940’s, before later working as a fitter on locomotives in the 1950’s and later still for ICI until the mid-1960’s when he emigrated to Australia.  Throughout his working history he was exposed to asbestos and tragically was diagnosed with mesothelioma in April 2008.  He instructed Leigh Day & Co in January 2009 to assist him with a claim for damages and working with leading Australian lawyers, Slater & Gordon, we managed to achieve an early settlement less than three months after our client confirmed his instructions.

He was represented by Daniel Easton, partner in the personal injury department.  Daniel said:
"It is imperative that we pursue all our clients' cases as swiftly as possible, no matter which part of the world they live in.  Thanks to the effective 'fast track' court system in place for mesothelioma cases we can and do succeed with these cases in a matter of months."
