Leigh Day & Co are representing
Ben Griffin, a
former SAS soldier who quit the UK Special Forces in protest at the conduct of coalition forces in Iraq.
On the evening of Thursday 28 February, the
Ministry of Defence obtained an injunction from the High Court gagging Mr Griffin after he had given a number of interviews to the national press.
Today Mr Justice Openshaw continued the injunction he made yesterday gagging Mr Griffin until a further hearing fixed for next Friday 7th March 2008.
After the hearing, Mr Griffin said:
“I have been prohibited by a court order obtained by the Ministry of Defence from saying anything. I will fight this order strenuously next time we are in court. I am confident that my free speech will be restored sooner rather than later.”
Richard Stein, Partner at Leigh Day & Co & Mr Griffin’s solicitor said:
“The use of such wide gagging orders by the government to restrict debate about issues of substantial importance such as these raises great public concern. We intend to fight the order with great vigour when it comes to court for a full hearing. We did not object to the order being made today on an interim basis for a very short period while we consider the MoD’s case and prepare our response”.
