Maurice Agis, the artist who created Dreamspace, has been charged with manslaughter. Two women died when the giant inflatable artwork that he was showing in Chester-le-Street broke free from the ropes holding it to the ground. Dozens of people were exploring the brightly coloured walk-in installation as it turned over. A number of people were thrown free while others were trapped inside.
Elizabeth Collings and Claire Furmedge were killed in the tragedy and a three-year old girl was seriously injured.
Durham police have charged Mr Agis with gross negligence manslaughter following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service. He also faces an offence under s.3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974.
Sally Moore comments:
"Hopefully with the commencement of the criminal proceedings the defendants in the case will now consider it appropriate to admit responsibility to these families and settle their civil claims for damages".
