A young mother has received compensation for the pain and suffering she endured because of the delay in the diagnosis of a rare abdominal tumour known as a gastro intestinal stromal tumour.
Suzanne White in the clinical negligence department of specialist law firm Leigh, Day & Co has acted for a woman who received compensation for the failure by her local hospital to follow up abnormal blood tests. The abnormal blood tests were taken in the Accident and Emergency department when the woman attended with abdominal pain, but were not followed up by the doctor who undertook the blood tests and were not sent to her GP. As a result there was a three-month delay in diagnosis of her rare tumour.
Whilst the delay in diagnosis did not on balance make a difference to the woman’s treatment and prognosis, the tumour grew extensively, so large in fact that the woman looked pregnant, which meant that she was admitted to hospital with an obstructed bowel, and suffered great pain and distress. The size of the tumour also caused her prolonged discomfort, and she was unable to look after her children. The hospital recently settled the case and our client has received compensation.
