Breast cancer cases missed by doctor

3 April 2008

The Fitness to Practice Panel of the General Medical Council has suspended Dr Amjan Husien from the medical register for 12 months. Whilst working as a Consultant Radiologist he failed to 'adequately assess and report on the mammograms of 17 patients. His reporting, clinical conduct and probable symptomatic error rate were inadequate, inappropriate, not in the patient’s best interests and not of the standard expected of a reasonably competent Consultant Radiologist.' A General Medical Council panel ruled on 31st March 2008 that he "repeatedly failed to provide an acceptable level of care to patients" in his breast imaging work at Trafford general hospital.

Dr Husien worked at Trafford General hospital as a breast cancer specialist from April 2003 until April 2005. In that time 17 women with cancer were told that they were healthy after Dr Husien read their breast scans. One of the women has since died and the mistakes led to a review of 450 cases.

Maria Panteli, a solicitor at Leigh Day & Co, has been involved with a number of cases where breast cancer has been misdiagnosed or missed completely. She says:

"An early diagnosis of breast cancer is important for a patient's treatment options and ultimately on their future prognosis and survival. These women would have been worried when initially attending the hospital for tests having been referred by their GP as a result of concerns that they could have breast cancer. To have been falsely reassured and to then discover that they do in fact have breast cancer is devastating, particularly when having to face the difference the delay has made to their outcome. Compensation claims can be brought in cases where there has been negligence and that negligence has had a significant impact on a patient's treatment and prognosis."
